Japanese Level 1 (SM23)

I taught this class at Summer Language Workshop at Indiana University (Summer 2023), as an 8-week online intensive summer course.
This class is considered as an equivalent of 2 university semesters, and 13 students from different parts of the US enrolled. As a lead instructor, I developed a syllabus, Canvas page, teaching plans, teaching materials, assignments, and exams. Outside of class, I also held office hours, graded students’ work, and organized weekly cultural events.
*Upon request, I will be more than happy to share the full course syllabus 😊
Course Description: This course is targeted for students who have no or little Japanese background. The first 4-week (Session A) is the equivalent of 1 university semester (Fall semester of IU), and the latter 4-week (Session B) is the equivalent of 1 university semester (Spring semester of IU). The course is designed to equip students with a solid foundation of the Japanese language (vocabulary, basic grammar structure, etc.), knowledge of cultural products and practices, and build awareness of some shared beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and social expectations typical in Japanese society.
Course Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to 1. Acquire an ACTFL proficiency level of Intermediate Low or better. 2. Orally present basic survival skills (understanding words; vocabulary; basic pragmatic knowledge; forming simple questions and sentences) to successfully represent themselves in Japanese society and converse with other Japanese speakers. 3. Write short sentences and dialogue using vocabulary and grammar learned in the course. 4. Demonstrate their understanding of the core meaning when they listen to short dialogues or read short passages in Japanese.
